The black orchid is native to the Peruvian Andes, in its natural habitat it is rare that it sees sunlight. To survive in such extreme circumstances without direct light, Black Orchid has developed out of the ordinary characteristics. For example, unlike other plants whose flowering periods last from two to three months, the black orchid blooms for only three weeks a year to preserve its metabolism. Even more remarkable is that the plants bear both male and female flowers so that their reproduction can constantly adapt to external conditions.
For Guerlain Scientific Research, these unique and rare characteristics have made Black Orchid a precious raw material, allowing it to become the very essence of BlackImmune ™ technology at the heart of the Orchidée Impériale Black line.
In 2016, Orchidée Impériale Black Cream has a new chapter in the history of Guerlain's skincare art. A first work within a complete range of skincare products, a previously unexplored direction in anti-aging by exploiting the extraordinary power of black orchid extract on the "cellular immunity" of the skin, reinforcing its self-defense capabilities .
In 2020 Guerlain presents the limited edition Kintsugi Orchidée Impériale Black Cream. Discover this creation inspired by a traditional Japanese art form and dedicated to an exceptional skin cream and a flower, the black orchid.
Since 1863, the prestigious porcelain manufacturer Bernardaud has embodied French excellence and has shared numerous values with the Maison Guerlain. In particular, a rich savoir-faire fusion of creativity and audacity handed down for generations.
For this special edition, Bernardaud House took inspiration from Kintsugi, the traditional Japanese art of decoration that uses fine gold to fill and enhance porcelain shards and cracks. Once enhanced, each creation becomes even more beautiful and takes on a new life.
In the Bernardaud House craftsmen have adapted the Japanese art of Kintsugi to the expertise of French porcelain. Each Kintsugi Orchidée Impériale Black edition jar is made entirely by hand and embellished with 24-karat gold. Each vase required a month of work by 50 craftsmen.
