The inspiration for Judy Zhang's Spring-Summer 2020 collection came from an ancient Chinese tale "Legend of the White Snake" also known as "Madame White Snake".
The tale took place in the Song dynasty, where a snake spirit, Bai Sui Zhen, after thousands of years of religious practices and magical doctrines, acquired the faculties of becoming human.
One day the White Snake went to the West Lake, in order to find a hunter that saved his life thousand years before. Under the bridge in Hangzhou's West Lake, met a nice and handsome young man named Xu Xian. The girl, who was the White Serpent before the transformation, immediately fell in love with the young man Xu Xian. The Serpent, now transformed in a beautiful woman, in order to catch the boy’s attention, dropped a hairpin to make the boy pick it up. Since it was raining, with the pretext of asking him to borrow an umbrella, the White Snake became acquainted with the young man.
The folk tale of the white snake give us the background story and visual inspiration for Judy Zhang's SS20 collection, the moment when, thanks to her superpowers, the girl started a rainstorm just to have an excuse to meet the boy. In fact, Xu Xian, during the rainstorm gave to the girl his umbrella and his address in Bai Su Zhen, after this scene he watched her flying over a boat.
The white serpent becoming the undisputed protagonist through the embroideries made with beads. In the prints, the snake, represented as in the Chinese folk tale, we can notice the incorporation of the friendly Italian "Ciao" and of the American "Airpods", fully embodying the union of Western and Eastern culture that the designer Judy mixes in her collections.
The garments made with spectacular pleats represents the different folds of the umbrella that Xu Xian held in his hand during the magical encounter. The Suzhou hand embroidery, the most important of all types of Chinese embroidery, embellishes the collection with silk.
