Helly Hansen Wins German Design Award 2019 with Innovative Sailing Apparel

Helly Hansen welcomes 2019 with one of the highest honors in product design, the German Design Award. Built for mobility and comfort, the HP Racing Midlayer Jacket, which uses the all-new LifaLoft™ insulation by Primaloft, was recognized for Excellent Product Design in the category of Sports, Outdoor Activities, and Leisure.

Applying the highest standard in selecting award winners, the German Design Awards conducts an elaborate nomination process, utilizing panels of experts from the world of business, education and science as well as the design industry. Only products and communications design projects that demonstrably set themselves apart from their competitors are chosen to qualify.

This year, the award welcomed 5,400 entries, with over 50% from countries abroad – an immense growth since the launch of the awards in 2012. After a two-day jury meeting, the German Design Council selected the HP Racing Midlayer Jacket for its “agile, sturdy and ecologically-friendly design” with the jury stating that “The HP Racing Midlayer Jacket ostensibly leverages state-of-the-art materials to present a highly functional option with character for the marine environment. Finished with DWR, the jacket is more sustainable than those using fluorocarbon proofing” and therefore judged a winner for the 2019 award.

The Category Managing Director of Sailing, Øyvind Vedvik, and the design team at Helly Hansen took its years of innovation in design in the sailing industry and introduced Helly Hansen’s latest development in insulation, LifaLoft™. The less bulky and lighter-weight LifaLoft™ delivers more warmth based on an increased number of microscopic air pockets that capture and retain heat. The jacket exterior is constructed with waterproof, windproof and breathable Helly Tech® fabrics that, combined with the insulation, provide full-stretch performance. The technical aspects mixed with the comfort and versatility of the HP Racing Midlayer make this jacket ideal for teams, as well as for those looking for authentic marine style.

“The design team and I are honored to be accepting the German Design Award,” said Vedvik. “This is a true testament to our commitment to make professional grade gear to help people stay and feel alive. The insights and feedback we receive from the professionals we outfit push us to create the best possible apparel for those who choose to spend their time in the world’s harshest environments. We could not be more pleased.

The HP Racing Midlayer Jacket for men and women will be available online and instore from February 2019 at www.hellyhansen.com.
